Neighbors in Salisbury celebrated National Night Out on August 4th by participating in a block party in the Mt. Hill area. Thanks to Cherie and Gregg Anderson for hosting this event. Detective George Burgess, our neighborhood security patrolman from the Chesterfield County Police Department, stopped by to introduce himself to attendees. Detective Burgess will also be attending the October Fall Safety Fair. One of the ideas that came out of the National Night Out party was that it was time to revitalize Salisbury’s Neighborhood Watch Program. Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that allows local homeowners to work with our law enforcement agencies by reporting criminal or suspicious activity. Neighbors are organized and trained in home and personal security. Observed information such as broken windows or doors, unusual noises such as breaking glass or loud yelling, or suspicious persons or vehicles, is transmitted to other group members and the police. The Neighborhood Watch does not, however, take the place of the police in enforcing the law or apprehending criminals. It is simply a group of concerned citizens taking the time to watch out for their neighbor’s well-being. Ideally, each area of Salisbury would have volunteers trained as a contact for the Neighborhood Watch program. Donating a small amount of time will have great benefits for the whole neighborhood. Please call or email me for additional information or to volunteer with the group. Chesterfield County Police also offer a FREE security assessment of your home through the Crime Prevention Section. An officer will visit your home and offer written recommendations to make your home safer. For more information: Call 804-748-1251.
